Pingdom offers us another layer of monitoring for our core applications and increases peace of mind for our executive team.
We have several layers of monitoring with alerts driven from AWS for the infrastructure team, but a simple ping to the sites and instant alerts to the executive team gives them peace of mind that our apps are up and responding.

We also publish our pingdom summaries to our clients to prove that we hit contractual uptime obligations.
  • Fast alerting of outages
  • Good summaries of monthly uptime achieved
  • Easy to use dashboard
  • N/A
Well suited to monitor uptime SLA's and provide instant notification of application outages.

Our organization has used Pingdom as an external monitoring provider for our data centers and networks for about 13 years now. We choose Pingdom because of it's reliability and features. In the 13 years we've had Pingdom, there have been very little false positives. Feature wise, it's nice to have "Root Cause" presented when a failure occurs - this surprisingly sets Pingdom apart from their other competitors which simply tell you if something is up or down. Traceroutes provided are useful to trace down potential issues.
  • Root Cause Analysis
  • Reliability
  • Traceroutes
  • Historical Data
  • Slow Web Interface
  • iOS App Lacking Functionality
Pingdom's Root Cause Analysis, the ability to monitor from multiple locations, and it's reliability are it's main draw, otherwise there are other competitors that are much cheaper but still get the job done. As said above, we use this monitoring system to essentially monitor our core systems and networks which include their monitoring systems. This also allows us to ensure we have good connectivity between multiple Pingdom nodes - which makes the cost worth it to us.

We use Pingdom to solve a few problems from uptime monitoring to verification of responses from specific endpoints. As well, we have used it to ensure that our partner's services are up and present as well. This helps us when we are trying to diagnose issues. Their ability to support different monitoring types helped us choose the product.
  • UI
  • Dashboard Information Summary
  • Notifications
  • API Access
  • Breakout of service options.
The level of program that we use lends itself well to services and products that have many URL endpoints that you want to monitor response times, presence, and content of. I don't remember if they have small enough offerings for front pages with only one or two urls that you'd want to monitor. If you service customers globally, Pingdom having multiple POPs is definitely helpful. The multiple POPs also helps remove notification fatigue when your services are only inaccessible from a single location.

I use it to test the uptime of our websites, we have internal testing of the sites, but we wanted a 3rd party out of the infrastructure that would just tell us that it is fully reachable. Pingdom provided this with an easy to use system, it also let us know if we were having high latency.
  • Clean
  • Simple
  • Effective
  • Reliable
  • Smaller increments of additional features
It is great for simple website uptime, and making sure that there isn't unexpected outages or slow-downs. I wouldn't use it for more complex scenarios such as API testing, although that is an area that may have been improved since I last looked at it. Very easy to use interface and can be set up in mins.

We at Hevo use Pingdom primarily for URL/endpoints and website uptime monitoring and alert tool. Also, each product team can set up monitoring of their internet-facing product on Pingdom.
  • URL/endpoints and website monitoring from different parts of the world
  • Uptime reporting
  • DNS uptime and alerting
  • Website speed test
  • Dashboard is a bit slow
  • The test reports download for a specific date range should be allowed

Our public facing connections including B2B and web portals are all monitored with latency monitors and realtime user simulations on our most critical customer facing webapps. Knowing our edge performance and uptime is invaluable for giving us ease of mind and allowing us to focus on improvements while getting instant feedback.
  • Ping latency from around the globe or region specific
  • Real time user simulations allowing deep analysis of performance and experience
  • Integrates wonderfully with the rest of the Solarwinds Platform to provide incredibly detailed transaction logs from end to end.
  • Integration of pingdom into Solarwinds platform is prone to disruptive changes where existing api templates are replaced without retaining function.
  • Integration of payment is still prone to issues given pingdom prefers credit card payment vs standard invoice approach used by enterprise orgs. 3rd year of repeated issues due to this during renewal.
In most cases if you have public facing portals or sites this will be a major boon to your developers. Knowing how long response times are for your website is the difference between knowing what to fix and taking stabs in the dark to try and increase performance to your end users. Pingdom excels at this and allows fantastic warnings to be set and updated via mobile app.
Even if you don't have public facing portals and sites that customers need to utilize it can still provide immense benefit to external connection points for vpn, or citrix/horizon portals used by employees.

We were using Pingdom to check the availability of our client's sites. Also we had a monitoring site in each of our web fleets, and we were using checks with each of those monitoring sites to detect when a fleet was down. We set alerts to be notified when sites were not accessible. It also helped us to provide our clients a visibility of theirs sites response using public status pages. It also helped to determine if we were under our SLA because Pingdom provided us how long a site was down. That way we could build the reports we sent to clients.
  • providing uptime stats
  • notifying us when sites were down
  • public status page (clients did love that)
  • Nothing at the top of my head right now. Our usage was very basic I guess, and we didn't have any issues using the available features.
Basically with Pingdom we were able to provide a better service to our clients. I want to emphasise on public status pages. It is hard to provide clients access to our monitoring tools, and sometimes to make them public and secure it requires a bit of effort. With Pingdom, and a few clicks, clients were able to have a visibility of their sites behaviour.

We were suffering from website outages, so deployed Pingdom to alert us as to the frequency and times this was happening.

It was a bit of an eye-opener, as it turns out our website was going down a lot more often than we were aware. By comparing the Pingdom alerts to our firewall and webserver logs, we were able to track down the cause of our issue.
  • Instant alerts
  • Weekly reports
  • Alerts when device is back online
  • Testing of individual webpages
  • Handling other types of webpage e.g. a *.esp page
  • Ability to add users directly, rather than via my.solarwinds.cloud
  • Sending of additional details when a device is down e.g. a screenshot of the webpage error
Pingdom is well suited to monitor any of your public facing IPs, so you receive an alert by text message or email when the IP you are monitoring does not respond for a given length of time, from an impressive 10ms to 30s. This allows you to be pretty granular with the alerting.
It's less appropriate for monitoring IPs on your LAN, unless you NAT these through your firewall.

We use Pingdom for 24x7 monitoring of our Online Platform. The reporting that Pingdom provides is also shared with Customers as required to show compliance with our published SLAs.

Pingdom provides an easy-to-use interface to configure alerts, set up SSL expiry notifications and configure complex health checks. The Root Cause Analysis Wizard comes in handy to get a handle on potential causes of the service outage
  • Ease of configuring a basic alert
  • Setup of SSL Expiry Threshold Alerts
  • Capability to publish an Uptime Report URL link to share with Customers
  • Capability to audit TLS/SSL and Cipher Suite configurations and providing warnings
  • Include OWASP TOP TEN Analysis Capability
  • Support for Web Application Scanning of Website
  • Ease of setup and use
  • Mobile App available
  • Multiple Alert options - email/sms and push notification
  • Flexible configuration for alert threshold
  • Ability to create complex checks using the Transaction Health Check
  • The SSL Certificate Expiry Threshold feature is extremely useful
  • The ability to choose which region should be used to monitor the platform i.e. Oceania, Asia Pac etc...is useful

We use Pingdom to monitor uptime for a key client. We need to know when the site goes down such that we can ensure effort is made to fix issues and bring the website back online. Pingdom helps by giving us real time feedback on uptime and by sending alerts to various contacts.
  • The alerts are very responsive offering quite detailed timing information
  • The UI for reports is very clear and set up of reports is very intuitive
  • Customer service was good when there were problems - e.g. lapsing billing causing reporting to go down
  • There could be more information about how to get the most out of the pingdom product(s) - we have a very defined use case but ultimately not entirely sure what else we can do with our subscription
  • Not sure whether you can use Pingdom for multiple clients.
  • The account management system is quite confusing - trying to access account information about the Pingdom product specifically was difficult as it redirected to a general solarwinds account platform
Solarwinds Pingdom is a very good monitoring platform that brings accountability to web teams managing and maintaining websites. As mentioned, we needed to know uptime for SLA purposes and for immediate maintenance and Pingdom really helps in giving us the peace of mind if the site is down then we can quickly know about it and deal with any issues. From a client management perspective then multiple notification routes are also really useful as our clients also are kept in the loop - again pretty helpful for accountability!

We use Pingdom to alert the team when there is an issue. The issue could be, but not limited to, a service not running on a server, Network issue, Server needing to be restarted, Printer status, and back up network configurations.
  • Customized alerts
  • Server monitoring
  • Hardware Health
  • Alerting on Network issue
  • Online support Forum
  • More modern interface
My Team is in charge of making sure two things happen. One is product comes in and gets put away. The other is to send that product out to customers. SolarWinds Pingdom allows us to monitor services, equipment and the network being used to accomplish that. The warehouse is not in production 24/7 but the monitoring process is. This has made us aware of issue that were fixed before a user was on the warehouse floor.

We bought Pingdom initially just to do quick and easy monitoring of our Customer facing web hosting to make sure all sites were up and responding, and would have been happy with just that functionality for the price paid. Afterwards we set up synthetic checks to log into these environments and validate basic functionality. Next, with some relatively minor code changes to our hosting, we started gathering Real User Experience data showing actual stats of page load times, user location and experiences. The only drawback we've found is that it's only capturing the initial page load - if you then do searches within that page you'll need some other way of capturing those stats.<br><br>That aside, we are very satisfied Customers and I'd be more than happy to recommend this
  • Ease of use
  • Value for money
  • Reporting
  • Inability to capture Real User Monitoring stats for searches within a page

I worked with several clients that had websites that need to be up, and when they are down, revenue is lost. I have used [SolarWinds] Pingdom for several of those client sites, to monitor uptime and to have accurate reporting of any downtime.
  • I've used it specifically to report Up/Down times
It's easy to configure and to test. [SolarWinds] Pingdom provides great monitoring and gives me peace of mind, knowing I will not get a false report. When you're charged with responding to alerts in the middle of the night, you want to know they are real. And their Ping methodology does not flag my firewall and is readily accepted by my hosting platform.

  • Easy to use

I have integrated Pingdom with OpsGenie so that when the service which we are monitoring is down then it will create an alert which will create an alert in OpsGenie through SMS, email and call and user who receive notification of this alert will fix it when the application goes up an alert in both OpsGenie and Pingdom will automatically close.
  • Monitoring of application availability.
  • Monitoring of application disk space, CPU usage.
  • Integration with other tools like OpsGenie.
  • It is sometimes slow to generate alerts when events happen.
  • It monitors on limited metrics.
  • It is costly for small enterprises.
It is a good tool to monitor applications availability and some basic metrics, and it provides very good integration with other tools like OpsGenie through which you can increase the boundaries of features that Pingdom provides and it is a good tool to purchase if your use case is similar. I have been using this tool for more than 2 years and I like it.

We are currently monitoring the servers on which our Saas based applications are running and we are monitoring uptime, downtime, availability and if and when an application is down, we are promptly notified so that we can look for the cause of the issue and fix it and keep the applications up and running. We have configured daily, weekly and monthly reporting so that we can identify how many times our applications went offline and what was the total downtime and what was the time to recovery. We are also monitoring the SSL, SMTP, and Response time of our applications.
  • Applications monitoring
  • Alerting
  • Reporting
  • sometimes sends false alerts
  • there should be some threshold value for when an application is not reachable, it should alert after 30 seconds and keep sending hello packets for those 30 seconds and if still there is no response, then it should send the alert.
  • too many unwanted metrics.
it is very well suited for those environments who are using Saas-based applications or web-based applications and they require in-depth application monitoring and multiple applications at a time, rather than the physical server-based monitoring for in-house applications where monitoring can be done by other SolarWinds products and not very well suited for pingdom.

We use SolarWinds Pingdom to monitor our websites and some other basic services like SMTP. We use it to provide uptime reports on a monthly basis as well. The alerting is used to alert staff when outages occur. The alert goes out using the SolarWinds Pingdom app as well as SMS.
  • Alerting
  • Monitoring
  • Uptime reporting
  • Updating alerting settings
It was a good cheap option for us to incorporate an external monitoring solution for our business-critical websites and services. We have not used any other features it provides. Since we are a small shop with limited IT staff, we don't need multiple users, just a simple monitoring solution that will alert staff when there is an issue.

We use Pingdom to monitor 30+ different web endpoints in terms of uptime - both internal and 3rd party applications. We have a team of admins that monitor different services and are notified within a minute via the Pingdom app, text, and email when anything goes down. Pingdom also gives us insight into what caused the error. This is an invaluable tool!
  • Timeout alerts.
  • Errors that result in non-200 HTTP responses.
  • Alerting us via different methods (SMS, notifications, email).
  • Allowing us to test uptime of internal applications.
  • Allow us to setup alerts that are more complex (not just an HTTP post/get request ... but something that is able to test an application that requires authentication).
  • Everything else is pretty straightforward and robust.
The best use case for our Pingdom implementation is to monitor uptime, from multiple locations, publicly accessible web endpoints. For that use case, it is invaluable. The use cases where Pingdom lacks is being able to monitor private resources. It also lacks the ability to troubleshoot code-level errors.

We use SolarWinds Pingdom for monitoring internet uptime at our client facilities as well as to keep track of outages of their internet properties as well. We receive SMS and email notifications promptly when service interruptions are detected and can manage the frequency and method of those notices. It has worked for us for several years now without interruption and is a core part of our monitoring platform.
  • Alerts us to outages
  • Notifies us promptly
  • Configurable to meet our needs
  • Failsafe rollover from SMS to email when credits are used up
It is great for monitoring website uptime and IPs associated with commercial internet services. We don't use it for anything else, so we don't have a sense of what it isn't good for in this regard. We are pleased with the service and plan to continue using it for the foreseeable future.

We needed simple uptime monitoring for a few customer-facing services that integrates with Atlassian Statuspage and didn't want to invest a lot of time and money to get that. Compared NewRelic, Datadog and Pingdom, the two first are too complex for what we need and the pricing was not a good fit. SolarWinds Pingdom was good enough for our needs; we did a test run in a week and then paid for the subscription. We have been using simple uptime checks and also tested transaction monitoring for a sign-in flow. It works great, simple setup, and uses Selenium for the actual testing. The only thing to improve is to have some sort of ENV variable instead of just putting a password in plain text.
  • Great uptime monitoring from different locations with flat pricing
  • Great integration with Atlassian Statuspage
  • Weekly reports of uptime
  • Easy to set up transaction monitoring
  • Transaction monitoring could benefit from some sort of protected variables for sensitive information
  • Administration/user management may take some time to get used to
  • Well suited for simple uptime monitoring for a few services in a startup with flat pricing and/or for transactional monitoring (synthetic tests).
  • Well suited for integrating with Atlassian Statuspage.
  • Not well suited if you need some advanced monitoring that requires gathering metrics from the host.

Monitoring uptime/availability for websites, infrastructure, and DNS servers
  • Global monitoring from regions and locations around the world
  • Ability to tailor monitoring settings and frequency
  • Simple dashboard to see status info
  • Somewhat inflexible when you need to override DNS settings
  • Monitoring non-standard settings or non-web traffic can be a little difficult
It's simple to use and quick to set up for monitoring uptime for websites. It can also be useful whether you own and manage the websites, or whether you use a service provider and just want to keep tabs on the level of service provided. The charting and tracking can be very effective for that.

We use SolarWinds for a few use cases. Most importantly we use SolarWinds Pingdom to manage our server network down/up status. We've always received stellar customer services and the product has worked for us without error. • Customer Service

SolarWinds Pingdom is best suited for companies seeking a solution to notify them if they have servers that are down. We host a set of servers that we use for demonstration purposes, and to support ongoing commitment to open source communities by ensuring that they experience great uptime with our servers and services. Knowing that a server is down quickly is key to maintaining uptime. On the flip side, we need a solution that isn't burdensome or requires lots of agents or other integration in a broad set of target servers and services for monitoring. We find that Pingdom is right-sized for us. Not too complex, but sophisticated enough for the vast majority of our use cases. Pricing is right.
  • Easy monitoring of GET based services.
  • Simple to set up.
  • Nice notifications to email and text messaging.
  • Can also do POST, HEAD and other http verbs.
  • Configuring a POST with various types of Auth requires a bit more clicking about than is needed, some of the UI is a bit dated.
  • Moving beyond simple checks to multi-step checks (i.e Log in to the site, clicking profile, check images on the profile page) means a big jump in the price tag.
  • Be nice to integrate with more different systems for receiving notifications, it's pretty much just email and SMS.
Where you are aiming for simplicity in the tool. It's not the full lifecycle or has the features of tools like DataDog or New Relic in monitoring and understanding what is happening in your stack. It's basically a nice PING feature ;-) Hence the name. If you want to monitor all layers of your tech stack, this isn't the right tool. Want to know if some things are up and running, just fine!
